Pizza in Buenos Aires: Wanna be a Ph.D? Read this!

Why do you need and explanation about pizza or pizzerias in Buenos Aires?

Because the italian food that italian inmigration brought between 1880 and 1930 is really huge and some of their foods with some local influence is still today regular food for us!!!!!

The typical topping that we order is Muzzarella pizza (chease pizza) with Faina (a bean dough) that you put on the top of the muzzarella pizza and eat both together. Number two in our ranking is Fugazzeta pizza, that is onion and muzarella, really good aswell.

Sunday nights if you pay attention you are going to see lots of delivery boys, for sure they are taking pizza or empanadas, traditional sundays family dinner!

We have THREE DIFFERENTS TYPE OF PIZZA:

"De molde" this is what we really consider the local pizza, the one your are going to eat in the traditional places. Is the thicker one.

"A la piedra" this is thin, and the cool popular one

"Italian" only a few places have this that is the thiner one, italian way!

Where to go?

To have Pizza "De molde" most of the places are in Av Corrientes or arround since is where this culture started, people use to go to the theatre and then have dinner on that area, in the order I give you is what I prefer:

1.- Güerrin : For me, the best muzzarella pizza in town! Av Corrientes 1368 - Downtown - here if you eat standing at the bar on the entrance the price is 30/40% less than if you choose a table! You should check the fried empanadas too!!!

2.-El Cuartito: Here we go with the best Fugazzeta pizza in town!!!! Talcahuano 937 - Downtown -Delivery 4816-1758

3.-Punto y Banca: a corner where people from the area and workers get together. I prefer the fugazzeta one here. Honduras 4002 - Palermo - Delivery 4864-4268

"A la piedra" pizzas are very well served in to differents chains Romario and Bakano (this last one is cheaper), empanadas are really good also!

1.- Romario: http://www.romario.com.ar/site/index.htm Delivery 4511-4444

Recoleta: Arenales 2007 @ Ayacucho // Vicente Lopez 2102 esq Uriburu

Barrio Norte: Juncal 2864 @ Austria

Palermo: Güemes 3602 @ Vidt // Fitz Roy 2109 @ Soler // Gurruchaga 1493 @ Gorriti // Honduras 5670

2.-Bakano: http://www.bakano.com/ Delivery 0810 - 888 - 2252

Barrio Norte: Agüero 1669 @ Av Santa Fe

Palermo: Fitz Roy 1906 @ Costa Rica // Salguero 1388 @ Honduras

"Italian" pizza is served on italian restaurants, there are two really cool, wherte also you can have great carpaccio, salads and even if you want a tenderloin beef

1.- FILO - San Martin 975 - Retiro

2.- PIOLA - Libertad 1078 - Recoleta

Lots of places! Enjoy Porteños pizza! :)

HOW DO I GO TO URUGUAY???

Another questions that are in the top rank: "Where can I get the tickets to go to Colonia?" "Is one day enough to go to Montevideo?"

One day is ok to go to Colonia, I dont think one day is enough for Montevideo (at least 1 night there).

If you are planing to go to Colonia a very nice thing to do is to rent a golf car and go arround "the old city" or a scooter, lunch, beach and then you come back! Beatiful day!

There are two companies that takes you to Uruguay, the traditional big one BUQUEBUS and a new one that the port for departing is not so well located as the other but is cheaper, the name is COLONIA EXPRESS. Check always online they use to have good deals!

WHAT TO EAT IN A PARRILLA AND WHERE????

Ok, Buenos Aires its famous because of our steak, but what else Argentinean beef has?
Its not only that the cows grown up in very fields so their muscles are not so developed and so the meat its softer, its also the way we cut it later!!! That is why, first advice, I wouldnt ask for the american T-Bone or Baby beef... come on! get into pur beef culture!!! :)

So here you got some recomendations of different cuts you may try:

Appetizers:
MOLLEJAS (glands, totally recommend this ones with lemon n salt! – not for everybody…)
PROVOLETA (its not meat, its provolone cheese and its great!!!)
CHORIZO (pork and cow sausage)
MORCILLA (blood sausage)

For the braves you can also try – I don’t like this and dont recomend you to do it…:
CHINCHULINES (guts)
RIÑONES (kidneys)

Main (all of them are beefs):
BIFE DE CHORIZO
ENTRAÑA
VACIO
ASADO DE TIRA (small ribs)
OJO DE BIFE (rib eye)
MATAMBRE TIERNIZADO
COLITA DE CUADRIL
LOMO (tenderloin)

Do you want pork?
BONDIOLA
MATAMBRITO DE CERDO

HOW TO EAT EVERYTHING?
When we go to a Parrilla, we use to order different cuts and then share them with our friends, its not one for one, if you get first, for sure then you ask for 1 portion each 2 people.

If you want to taste a desert , a classic here its “FLAN CON CREMA Y DULCE DE LECHE”.

WHERE TO GO?
Its easy, welcome to Argentina!!!
You don’t need to pay a fortune for getting a very good steak….

There four big groups of parrillas:

Prices are what I payed last time Ive been there without wine, the really expensives ones are the price Ive been told! :)

PARRILLON (1) its a place from de neighborhood, cheap, and you re not going to expect a great service, price will be about
  • EL DESNIVEL San Telmo – 1 - Defensa 855 – Tel 4300-9081 I TOTALLY RECOMEND THIS ONE! Ask for BIFE DE CHORIZO MARIPOSA!
  • LAS CABRAS - Palermo - Soler @ Fitz Roy - Its really cheap, go early! Nice atmosphera! Its no so parrillon, looks like more cool!
  • LA GRAN HOLLYWOOD - Palermo - Bonmpland 2205 - 4773-3580

CLASSIC ONE (2) ($ 60 - $100) the old style one with real waitors price will be about
  • LA BRIGADA – San Telmo - Estados Unidos 465 – tel 4361-5557 - Book and ask for a table at lobby, perhaps you are lucky and you have a Tango singer over there! I love this place!!!! Mollejas and Provoleta are the best!!!!
  • LA RAYA – Barrio Norte- Ortiz de Ocampo 2566 – 4802-5763
  • PARRILLA PEÑA – Barrio Norte – Totally local and familiar one! - Rodríguez Peña 682 – tel 4371-5643

MODERN OR COOL ($70-$100 each)
  • LA CABRERA – Palermo Soho – Everybody likes this one!!! - Cabrera 5099 - tel 4831-7002 - Dont forget to book for this one!
  • LA DORITA - Palermo Hollywood - Humboldt 1905 -4773-0070
  • DON JULIO – Palermo - Guatemala 4691 – 4831-9564
  • EL ENCANTO – Palermo Hollywood – Bompland 1690
  • LA POPULAR – Almagro- Lavalle 3602 esq Mario bravo – 4861-6378
EXPENSIVE ($150 and up)
  • EL MIRASOL– Puerto Madero - Alicia Moreu de Justo 202 – Tel 4315-6277
  • EL MIRASOL DE LA RECOVA – Recoleta - Posadas 1032 – Tel 4326-7322
  • CABAÑA LAS LILAS – Pto Madero - Alicia Moreu de Justo 516 – 4313-1336

The ones on bold letter are the ones I take my friends and I love going! :D

If you try that 4 ones, you will have an idea of how are Parrillas, if you have to choose only one, LA BRIGADA (if you are close to San Telmo) or LA CABRERA (if you are in Palermo area) and if you go to La Cabrera, share is the main tip, the portions are HUGE!
